Reflecting on an informative and inspiring discussion: National CASA/GAL begins a new network author book series
National CASA/GAL launched a new book club series this month featuring works by authors in the CASA/GAL network. The book series offers CASA/GAL volunteers and staff a valuable opportunity to explore key issues affecting children and families involved in the child welfare system. This initiative intends to foster a deeper sense of community and shared learning by spotlighting the literary contributions of our network’s authors.
The first book in this series is The Shadow in Our Lives: One Family’s Recovery from Child Sexual Abuse by Tracey Wilson Heisler, MA. Heisler currently serves as the Executive Director of CASA of Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties (CASA SHaW).
In her compelling memoir, Heisler takes readers through her family’s journey, from the initial discovery of abuse to the stages of recovery. Heisler provides a candid reflection on her actions, sharing both what she did right and what she now wished she had done differently.
Part memoir and part self-help guide, The Shadow in Our Lives is an essential read for anyone who suspects abuse in their family or works with victims and families. It offers key insights and practical advice, making it a valuable resource for both personal and professional growth.
After reading and discussing the book, CASA/GAL staff and volunteers recently participated in an online discussion with the author on January 29, 2025. Staff and volunteers asked questions and listened to Heisler discuss the process of drafting the book, how it affected her family, and what the book provides for readers.
Through this book series, authors can connect to the CASA/GAL network and share their insights, experiences, and stories, enhancing our collective understanding and advancing our mission.
