By her own admission, Joyce Harrison Honeyman was never one to “sit back and take it easy.” In addition to a 26-year career at Digital Equipment Corporation/Compaq and Hewlett-Packard, she was also president of the Meydenbauer Bay Yacht Club Mates, president of the Women’s Interclub Council, president of the Seattle Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta and a trustee of Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation.
But the CASA/GAL mission held a special place in Joyce’s heart.
In her capacity as a liaison from the Theta Foundation, she represented the Foundation on the board of directors of National CASA/GAL from 1992 to 2006, including two terms as treasurer and numerous committee roles. Joyce’s time on the board demonstrated her kindness, competence, enthusiasm and deep passion for National CASA/GAL’s work on behalf of children. In 2006, she was presented with the prestigious President’s Award from National CASA/GAL.
Joyce was particularly proud of never missing a National CASA/GAL board meeting during her 14 years of service, and she and her husband Ron attended the National CASA/GAL conference each year for 21 years. Her tireless work for both Theta and National CASA/ GAL created a strong and thriving partnership that continues to grow.
Joyce explained in 2013 why this partnership was so important to her: “Supporting CASA nationally and on the local level gives our collegians and alumnae both something to get their arms around. We hear from many of our new members that they have joined because of our national philanthropy, and that just makes my heart sing.”
In a letter thanking Joyce for her service, members of the Theta Foundation nominating committee wrote, “Your leadership, energy and loyalty are valued! Your promotion of the Theta/CASA relationship has helped develop close ties, mutual admiration and respect between the two organizations.”
An alumna of Theta’s Beta Zeta Chapter at Oklahoma State University, Joyce passed away in October 2014.
“Both Kappa Alpha Theta and National CASA are richer for having established this warm and meaningful partnership.”
